Dominica is kept alive throughout the year through its colourful, festive spirit reflected in the celebrations of its carnivals, religious festivals, sporting events and musical extravaganzas. |
Carnivals & Feasts
February marks the celebration of Mas Dominik followed by the main Carnival, on the Monday and Tuesday, just before Ash Wednesday. People dance in the streets for several hours in the midday sun dressed in Sensay costumes.
Layer upon layer of banana or cloth is used for the costume & a scary mask with horns is worn over the face. Large quantities of beer are consumed and the laws of libel & slander are suspended. Apart from the main Carnival, there are several feasts organized all the year round. Kone Kon La, Fete Isidore in Pentecost, Fete Marin in Portsmouth, Feasts of St. Theresa, St. Anne, and St. Geraud are the ones just to name a few.
Music & Dance Festivals
Sporting Events
The annual Dive Fest in July is the major sporting event in Dominica. Races, underwater treasure hunts, sailing, kayaking etc. are the main attractions of this event. Dominica International Sport fishing Tournament, held in May, is another attraction for numerous tourists and competitors. The World Domino Championship Tournament is organized in the month of July, annually.
Arts & Crafts Festivals
April witnesses the celebration of the School’s Arts Festivals to encourage students in arts and crafts. Domfesta, the festival of art and craft starts in June. It includes exhibits by local artists such as Kelo Royer, Earl Etienne, Arnold Toulon. Concerts and theatre performances are also a part of this festival. The Giraudal Flower Show in May is a major crowd-puller.
Religious Festivals
The island’s populace being mainly Christian, Easter and Christmas is celebrated with the usual spirit, fun & gaiety. Religious feasts, like Castle Bruce village feast, are a common feature. The community day of service is organized in November.
