Festivals in Austria

Austria is a culturally rich country, the cultural season in Austria are therefore very lively and vibrant, with numerous cultural events and festivals taking place. Here’s a list of some of the most important festivals taking place in different parts of Austria;


1: Music Festival (as part of the Vienna Festival)

The Vienna Festival concerts are the highlights of Vienna's concert season. The world's most renowned orchestras, conductors and soloists will be performing. Among the participants at the festival, one finds major musical stars such as pianists Alfred Brendel and Maurizio Pollini, soprano Jessye Norman, and the tenors Johan Botha and Michael Schade.

 

2: KlangBogen Vienna

Placido Domingo has become an integral part of Vienna’s Summer of Music, in 2005; he will conduct two performances of Franz Lehár’s operetta “The Count of Luxembourg” at the historic Theater an der Wien. The Event includes an array of musical styles from classical orchestral concerts and operettas to romantic chamber music concerts and contemporary opera.

 

3: Vienna Film Festival

One of the summer highlights is the Film Festival in front of the Vienna City Hall. Each night a different film connected to operas is presented on the massive screen. There is no entrance fee.


4: Salzburg Easter Festival

Founded by famed conductor Herbert von Karajan in 1967 to provide a venue for his orchestra, the Berliner Philharmoniker, this festival quickly established itself as one of the great musical venues for artists and audiences alike. One opera, performed in the Large Festival Hall, is performed during the Easter week.


5: Salzburg Festival

Salzburg is getting ready for the Mozart Year 2006. In preparation, this year the Salzburg Festival will present director Graham Vick’s new production of “The Magic Flute” by Salzburg’s very own Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. There is also a great treat for fans of Giuseppe Verdi, A new production of Verdi’s “La Traviata,” with the Russian-born star Anna Netrebko as Violetta and the renowned American baritone Thomas Hampson as Germont.

 

6: Festival of Early Music & Ambras Palace Concerts Innsbruck

One of the most important festivals of Early Music worldwide is held in Innsbruck every year. The Innsbruck Festival of Early Music is now celebrating its 29th year. In the past few decades, it became renowned for performing some relatively unknown, but above all transcendently performed works of the Renaissance period. One of the most beautiful settings of the Festival has become a favorite place for audiences from all over the world: the Ambras Palace Concerts combine the unparalleled ambiance of a medieval palace with the artistry of great masters over their instruments.

 

7: Viennese Opernball

The most famous, expensive and glamorous festival in Vienna is the Viennese Opernball, taking place in the Vienna State Opera since 1877.

Because of its long-lasting tradition, its exclusive ambient and its exquisite opening ceremony, the Opernball has been a favorite of the international high society.Many celebrities and stars like Sophia Lauren, Grace Jones, Heather Locklear, Pamela Anderson have visited this famous ball.

 

8: New Year's Concert - Neujahrskonzert 

This concert of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, known for playing "serious" music, is dedicated to the Strauss family and the Waltz. Since 1939 this annual welcome to the New Year has been staged in traditional Musikverein building. It is broadcast live on TV and a very popular interna
