Dubai World Cup 2009

Dubai world cupThe Dubai World Cup is one of the richest, most glamorous Equestrian events in the sporting calendar. It is indeed a wonderful opportunity to meet the best horses and jockeys from around the world eager to compete for million of dollars that are at stake in prize money. That's a purse of US$6 million, with US$3.6 million going to the winner of the mile-and-a-quarter race.

From 01 Mar 2009 to 31 Mar 2009 this  one race on the 2km (1.3 mile) sand and dirt track which is flood-lit at night and crowded with thousands of cheering spectators will see a further five thoroughbred group races included in the day's programme plus another group for purebred Arabian horses.

Dubai World Cup horse race was held annually since 1996 at the Nad Al Sheba Racecourse in the city of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A visit to the state-of-the-art racecourse is an event in itself with its floodlit sand and dirt track and television monitors in all areas. The race is operated through the Emirates Horse Racing Authority (EHRA) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs of Dubai.

The brainchild of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, the Dubai World Cup is a fitting tribute to his love of horses and of horseracing.

Staged on March 29, 2008, the Dubai World Cup meeting comprised of seven races of varying purses, totaling a staggering $21.25 million. The meeting is not just about the world's richest race, as the rest of the seven-race card is also stacked with quality.

Chief supporting races are the US$5 million Dubai Duty Free and the US$5 million Dubai Sheema Classic - the two richest races run on turf, anywhere in the world. Also on the card are the Dubai Golden Shaheen and UAE Derby, both worth US$2 million, and the US$1 million Godolphin Mile, while the evening kicks off with the Group 1 Dubai Kahayla Classic for Purebred Arabians.

Admission for all to the public enclosure is free. Admission to the International Village will be by bar-coded ticket only.
