Rising from the desert sands, the futuristic city of Dubai is fast emerging as one of the top holiday destinations in the world. And no trip to Dubai is complete without a foray to the hills of sand that border it. |
Dune driving is an art in itself and expert instructors are on hand 24X7 to teach the uninitiated the requisite skills. A simple drive to the desert presents innumerable possibilities; it opens doors to a veritable feast of thrills & excitement - dune & wadi driving, sand skiing, camel rides, belly- & sword-dances & finally the all-encompassing desert feast.
Speeding across the wadis is another adrenaline-booster that both visitors & locals look forward to. The term ‘wadi’ in the local lingo connotes a dry river-bed that is usually filled with water after the winter showers in the nearby Hajjar Mountains.
Venture deep into the desert and you will spy occasionally the Arabian fauna - wild foxes, gazelles & eagles - in their natural habitats. Needless to mention you will surely spot groups of camels or Bedouin camps enroute.
A desert safari usually entails sand skiing sessions & camel rides as well; and during winter, camel races are held on Thursdays and Fridays. Most desert safaris commence midday culminating in the sunset views in the desert and end in fun-packed evenings with traditional music and belly dancing. Every year group tours are organised to the desert that are eagerly anticipated by the adventurous residents and visitors to Dubai.
