Antigua's Sailing Week

Sailing has been a main part of Antigua’s culture for centuries. The greatest naval hero of the British, Horatio Nelson made Antigua their Caribbean base. Today the Nelson’s Dockyard hosts a more pleasure seeking fleet like the international racing boats, recreational yachts, and classic sailboats of Antigua’s annual Sailing Week.

The constant trade winds and the many harbors of exploration make yachting, cruising and racing a pleasurable experience. The island is centrally located for Caribbean cruising and the island is connected with North America and Europe by air. English Harbor and Jolly Harbor make ideal yacht headquarters.

The 39th Antigua Sailing Week will commence with Race 1 on April 30th, 2006 and end on Friday May 5th. There will be an additional Bareboat Championship Race on Saturday May 6th, 2006. Over the years Sailing Week has evolved from a regatta for local yachtsmen to an international event that spans five days (and more if you include the pre-event activities). It attracts an average of 200 yachts, over 1500 participants, 5000 spectators and some of the biggest, fastest and most impressive sailing yachts in the world packed with Olympic, America's Cup and round the world sailors.

Sailing Week is the sailing equivalent of holding a tennis grand slam in the Caribbean where you can compete against the stars - with huge parties! It takes you from historic Nelson's Dockyard to Dickenson Bay and back.
