Anthestiria Flower Festival, Cyprus

Paphos, a historic holiday town on the west coast of Cyprus, is divided into two parts. The old town, Kato Paphos dotted with the hotels and restaurants and the newer town, Kitima built 3 km over the hill. Paphos is a heritage town listed as the UNESCO’s World Heritage Site. During the historic period of the ancient Greeks and the Romans, it was the prosperous capital of Cyprus.

Besides the ancient architecture, Paphos is also known for the Anthestiria Flower Festival held every year. It is celebrated during the month of May every year as the rebirth of nature and spring. The history of celebration dates back to ancient Greek times. During that period, feasts were organized in Athens every four years in honor of Dionysus, the god of theatre and parties. Anthestiria was also the carnivals of souls, plants and flowers to celebrate the re-birth of man and nature.

In the contemporary times, the Anthestiria Flower Festival in Cyprus has a theme similar to that of the ancient feasts. The word ‘Anthestiria’ is derived from the Greek word ‘anthos’ meaning flower. During the Anthestiria Flower Festival, a parade of flower is taken out with people carrying beautiful, vibrant, aromatic and fresh flowers down the Poseidon Avenue and fills the old harbor, Kato Paphos of Paphos.

If you visit Cyprus, during the Anthestiria Flower Festival, make sure to be a part of the colorful celebration. A visit to the Troödos Mountains, where the picturesque view of the blue skies and hillsides full of blooming poppies, gladioli, daisies and blossoming trees is a sight to behold and cherish life long.
