The most popular form of folk music is Viennese schrammelmusik, which is played with the help of a portable box-shaped free-reed instrument and a double-necked guitar. Schrammelmusik is the combination of rural Austrian, Hungarian, Slovenian, Moravian and Bavarian culture. Its lyric depicts the socio-cultural life of Austrian people.
Folk music goes side by side with Austrian folk dance which is the identity of Austrian people. In Austria, the whole range of folk dances is known as Folkloretänze and the Austrian type of folk dance is called as Volkstanz. The popular Christmas carol Silent Night is also the outcome of great Austrian music.
Modern arena of Austrian music is dedicated to Western and piano form of music. The creation of new kind of piano music goes to Franz Liszt. He was the most colourful and a genius pianist whose contribution is a part and parcel of Austrian musical origin.
The most famous and popular category of throat singing ‘Yodeling’ is also originated in Alps, Austria and then spread to Switzerland and later to India and other countries.
