Music prevails in each and every corner of Austrian social and cultural life. There is music everywhere in Austria. The famous Austrian music includes Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, Vienna Symphony, State Opera and the magnificent Volks Opera.
Since 18th century Vienna has been the great European capital of classical music.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven and Johann Strauss II were associated with the city. During the Baroque period, Slavic and Hungarian folk forms influenced Austrian music. In the early 1500s,Vienna's status began its rise as a cultural center and the prime area was around musical instruments including the lute.
During the 18th century, three music composers marked their brilliant work namely Ludwig Von Beethoven with his symphonic pattern of music, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart came with his balance between melody and form and Joseph Haydn's development of the string quartet and sonata. The piano music came in force only at the later part of 18th century. During this period, a division of serious art and music began. In the year 1960 the music pioneer Gustav Mahler was born and influenced many composers.
Other than its popular classical and piano music Austria is also famous for its folk music. The most popular form of folk music is Viennese schrammelmusik, which is played with the help of a portable box-shaped free-reed instrument and a double-necked guitar. Schrammelmusik is the combination of rural Austrian, Hungarian, Slovenian, Moravian and Bavarian culture. Its lyric depicts the socio-cultural life of Austrian people.
Folk music goes side by side with Austrian folk dance which is the identity of Austrian people. In Austria, the whole range of folk dances is known as Folkloretänze and the Austrian type of folk dance is called as Volkstanz. The popular Christmas carol Silent Night is also the outcome of great Austrian music.
Modern arena of Austrian music is dedicated to Western and piano form of music. The creation of new kind of piano music goes to Franz Liszt. He was the most colourful and a genius pianist whose contribution is a part and parcel of Austrian musical origin.
The most famous and popular category of throat singing ‘Yodeling’ is also originated in Alps, Austria and then spread to Switzerland and later to India and other countries.
