Art of Seychelles

The exotic natural beauty of Seychelles is a constant source of inspiration to  artists, both local and international. The majority of the indigenous artists live on the isle of Mahe, but well-stocked galleries displaying rare gems of art, can be found on the other islands as well.

Whilst touring the island of Mahe, you will quite often stumble upon an artist’s gallery or home. Under no obligation to buy, you may simply stop and take a look; indeed the artists will be happy only to discuss their art and life with you.

Prominent names in the Seychellois art circuit include Donald Adelaide, Michael Adams, James Auguste, Tom Bauers, Alain Camille, Georges Camille, Gerald Devoud, Antonio Flippin, Christine Harter and Nigel Henri.

One can buy originals and prints from Christy’s Art Gallery (in Quincy Street, Victoria) and at the gallery of Christine Harter (Cafe d’Art, Praslin). Most artists have their galleries at their home, where visitors can simply take a look, and buy if they wish.

On the outskirts of Victoria and near the Beau Vallon beach is a small wooden teahouse that also serves as a gallery. This quaint shop exhibits various pieces of artwork across the Seychelles; most of the items are for sale. The visitor can relax in the warm, congenial atmosphere, drink a tea or coffee, eat a slice of cake, and examine the paintings unhurriedly.

Another popular hangout of art aficianados, is Christine Harter’s gallery, Cafe d’Art on Praslin, Cote d’Or. Extending to the beach, this is essentially a restaurant, exhibiting objets 'd art in the rear rooms.
