Puerto Rico is a land of varying and unusual topography. A rugged mountain range runs across the center from east to west, which often prevents rain clouds from passing to the south. The north side of the island is covered by dense vegetation, karst formations, and rushing streams, while, the south side is sun-toasted terrain, home to tropical dry forests and many species of exotic birds. In this terrain there a variety of adventure trails.
Angels Cave
Angels Cave is accessed by climbing down Angeles Sinkhole. The enormous chambers of the cave are filled with natural pools, striking calcite formations and other wonders. This can be followed by a mudslide swish through the Camuy River, exploring its many caverns.
Camuy Caverns
The Rio Camuy Cave Park has an underground river underneath and three crater-like sinkholes and 2 caves that are open to the public. You descend by trolley into a sinkhole that is lined with lush tropical vegetations. Bridges and ramps connect the landscape while the 170-foot high Cueva Clara takes visitors to a platform that overlooks the 400-foot deep Tres Pueblos Sinkhole. To go down into the Spiral Sinkhole and Cave means climbing down 205 steps. The cave is not accessible by visitors, experienced highly experienced spelunkers. It is believed that the sinkhole was once an enormous cavern. The second cave is Cathedral Cave and it is home to an interesting collection of petroglyphs etched into the wall by ancient Tainos.
Tanama River
The Tanama River is located in the central mountains, south of Arecibo, through the beautiful landscape of the karst forests. The adventure itself is only for experienced thrill-seekers and involves body rafting through striking valleys. Access to the river is by rappelling through a cave directly into the waters of the Tanama Rivers. Then you can float past natural springs, exotic vegetation and native wildlife. You can also spend the night along the river bank and gaze at the stars in the clear night sky.
