Nature Tourism in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea proves to be a promising and delightful experience for birdwatching enthusiasts. The country is home to over 700 species of birds including 38 of the 43 known species of the exotic Bird of Paradise. Other distinct birds include the cassowary, a 1.8 metres high creature that can weigh up to 59kg, and the Crowned Pigeon that is the size of a turkey.


A substantial part of Papua New Guinea is covered with a dense layer of rainforest hosting an exotic tangle of vines, creepers, flowers, plants and trees. Abundant wild orchids bloom against a verdant green background of rainforest canopy. The vibrant and magical hues of the 2000 orchid species adorn the country. 


Most animals found in Papua New Guinea are marsupials. Pigs are a valuable source of food and an important status symbol among the Highlands tribal people here. There are about 200 species of reptiles, including thirteen different turtle species and 100 different types of snakes.


The region of New Guinea has a wide variety of insects with the most impressive being the elegant butterflies. There are innumerable magnificent butterflies, around 700 species, found here including the world's largest, the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing that is only found in this region of the world, also add colour to this ambiance.

The tropical climate, many mountain valleys and islands offer a variety of different habitants to exist and also leads to the evolution of many new species peculiar to Papua New Guinea. These species are found in restricted areas of the country only.

 

The Delia species is only found on certain mountain peaks while the Queen Alexandra's Birdwing butterfly is confined to the lowland rainforests of the Oro Province.
