Surfing As a surf destination, Papua New Guinea is relatively new to surf enthusiasts. There is the possibility of good surf at Kavieng between November and February and around Wewak from September to January. |
Surfers have found the breaks here as challenging as any others they face elsewhere. Kavieng in the New Ireland Province is a surfer's paradise, where the provincial waters swell from storm and monsoon activities coming from the Bismark sea and waves hit reefs and points at the end of their journey. Kavieng boasts up to 20 breaks with even amount of lefts and rights.
Hula, a traditional village about 2-3 hours drive from Port Moresby is another ideal surf site catering for the local surf enthusiasts. Other documented breaks are in the waters around Wewak in the East Sepik Province and Aitape in the West Sepik Province.
Canoeing, Kayaking & Rafting
Sepik River has been a favored destination for canoeing in Papua New Guinea.
This mode offers the best in experiencing the cultures of the river people and to marvel the landscape and the river system itself. Many fit and well-equipped people canoe down the Sepik each year which had proved to be very satisfying.
There are operators along the river system who hire out their dug out to interested visitors who wish to explore and experience how the river people go about their day to day lives. There are guest / rest houses along the river where one can spend the night.
Kayaking is also making its mark in the event calendars of PNG lately. It got off in a big way with the first World Kayaking Championship held in October of 1998 in Lorengau, Manus province. Kayaking can also be done at Malolo Plantation Resort in Madang, Loloata Island Resort in Port Moresby and Nusa Island Retreat in Kavieng.
Foreign tour operators offer fabulous rafting down PNG's turbulent mountain rivers, but there are no regular local operators yet.
