The Republic of Malta is an island nation with a long legacy of cultural amalgamation. Mediterranean charm and climate coupled with Anglo-Saxon traditions make Malta a popular tourist spot. Malta is a densely populated European microstate, comprising an archipelago of seven islands. Situated in Southern Europe, 93 km (58 mi) off the coast of Sicily (Italy), it is located in the Mediterranean Sea. Malta gained independence from Britain in 1964 and is currently a member of the European Union in addition to being part of the Commonwealth of Nations and the UN.
