Visitors to the island are awed by the beauty of the surroundings as well as the dignified demeanor of its inhabitants. Bermuda is a mix between island informality and British reserve. Here are some tips to make your trip go smoothly. |
Facts for the Traveller:
Name: Bermuda
Capital: Hamilton
Area: 21 sq km
Language: English, Portuguese
Flight Time: 7.5 Hours from London
Clothing
There is one rule around the island – dress conservatively. Nudity is not allowed on the beaches and it is forbidden to appear in public without a shirt or in a bikini top. Bathing suits, abbreviated tops, and short shorts are not acceptable except at beaches and pools. Casual sports wear is allowed in restaurants during lunch time, but evening dining requires formal dress.
Season-by-season guide to attire
In the warmer months (May to mid-November), make certain to pack:
Summer-weight sports clothes, swimsuits, a raincoat or lightweight windbreaker for daytime activities
Evenings call for casual elegant cottons, with ladies in a light dressy sweater or cocktail-type outfits and gentlemen in a sports jacket and tie
In the cooler months (December to late March), visitors will need to bring:
Light woollens or fall-weight casuals, sweaters, a raincoat, windbreaker or coat, and, as always, swimsuits for the daytime
Evenings deserve elegant lightweight woollens, with ladies in a dressier sweater or cocktail attire and gentlemen in a suit or sports jacket and tie.
Currency The currency is Bermuda Dollar (BD$), which is equal to the US Dollar. Most shops and restaurants will accept the US Dollar but not other currencies. It is advisable to exchange your existing currency upon arrival. All major credit cards are accepted everywhere and can be used to make cash advances at ATMS. Personal checks drawn on US banks are accepted in some places.
When to go
The high season for travel to Bermuda is during the warmest part of the year from April through until the end of October, and this is the time when the tourist industry on the island is at its peak, with all attractions open for business.
During the colder season, hotel prices tend to be cheaper, and if you're looking for a golfing holiday in Bermuda, then this is the best time to visit. It's not necessarily a good idea to go swimming in the sea, because it gets pretty cold in winter, but offshore winds make Bermuda an excellent place to go wind-surfing or sailing.
Shopping All stores are open from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm at Bermuda’s popular Royal Naval Dockyard. Also, many stores in hotel shopping malls observe abbreviated Sunday hours. Most other stores on the Island are closed, including those along Front Street in the City of Hamilton, and in the Town of St. George. However, some souvenir and gift shops are open on Sundays.
