Getting aound Bermuda

Getting around the island of Bermuda is relatively easy with a wide variety of options available from taxis and buses to scooters and ferries. By law, car rentals are not available on the island for visitors. The best way to get around is by horse and carriage, the traditional public transport used by islanders and visitors alike.

Public transportation consists primarily of air-conditioned pink and blue buses and ferries that operate at frequent intervals to most of the visitor destinations throughout Bermuda. A ferry service plies the waters between Hamilton, Paget and Warwick, or from Hamilton to Ireland Island and to St. George’s. Both the bus and ferry service are inexpensive and convenient.

Private transportation in Bermuda is available from taxis, scooter rentals, pedal cycles, the Bermuda Railways Train in Dockyard, Hamilton & St. George’s; as well as 19-foot whaler boat rentals for water exploration. A relic of Bermuda’s past is the fringe-topped horse-drawn carriage and there are a few still in service taking visitors on tours of Hamilton and surrounding neighborhoods. They are still a popular mode of transportation at weddings to and from the church. The island’s Governor still uses the horse to pull the official landau during civic ceremonies such as the Convening of Parliament and the Queen’s Birthday Parade.

Taxis
Taxis around the island are metered as per Government regulations. The taxi drivers are informative and friendly, serving as unofficial tour guides for your journey.

Public Bus
Buses service almost all areas of interest with clearly marked bus stops. Bus drivers require exact change when boarding the bus. However Transportation Passes for daily and weekly travel are also available, and are more convenient.

Scooters and Bicycles
A fun way to get around is by renting a scooter or bicycle so that you can wind your way across the curving roads and enjoy the scenery at your leisure. Speed limit is 35 kilometers per hour; gas stations are open from 7am to 7pm; and you drive on the left side of the road.

Ferries
Ferries serve the same purpose as buses and are affordable with daily, weekly or monthly pass. They stop off at all major points, providing a scenic trip around the island.
